Pondus was highlighted as a horse to follow on page 142 of Ahead On The Flat and was put forward as a possible Skybet Ebor contender. The former James Fanshawe trained four year old shaped well on his first start for Joseph O'Brien at Limerick last month and built on that performance at Roscommon on Tuesday. Contesting a twelve furlongs Listed event, the gelded son of Sea The Moon wasn't suited by the steady early gallop but he stayed on strongly to win going away by two and a quarter lengths. Inclined to race keenly early on, he will stay further if he consents to relax during his races. Effective on most types of ground, he is a very interesting horse for the remainder of the year and could develop into an Irish St Leger contender in September. I am hoping he will be given an entry at York next month because he would be very much short list material.
