Following a slightly sticky start to May, the Top 40 Prospects has regained the winning thread with a couple of short price winners in recent days. The pair looks promising types, too. Holocene made a successful start to her career at Ripon on Sunday winning when taking the ten furlongs fillies' maiden. A well bred daughter of Ulysses out of the high-class mare Heaven Scent, William Haggas filly sat in behind long time leader Yorkindness before going to the front inside the final quarter of a mile. Pushed out for a length and a quarter win, it was the ideal start and it will be interesting to see how far she can progress. A novice stakes under a penalty will be next before going up in grade.
Mighty Ulysses, as the name suggests, is also by Ulysses and he didn't appear to stay ten furlongs when only fifth in the Listed Blue Riband Derby Trial at Epsom on his reappearance. The John & Thady Gosden trained colt dropped back to a mile at Newmarket last Friday and made no mistake. Fitted with a hood for the first time, he quickened away in the latter stages to register a four and a half lengths victory. Rated 95, he has been given an entry in the Silver Bowl Handicap at Haydock on Saturday. Despite the quick turnaround, he will be a dangerous opponent, especially if the very talented Benoit De La Sayette is on board once again and claiming seven pounds. Rather like his dam Token of Love, Mighty Ulysses is evidently at his best over a mile on a sound surface.
