What the Press Say:

Follow this top prospect

Mark Howard's One Jump Ahead has just been published. Regarded as the leader in its field, this publication has consistently delivered a stream of winners to its readers over the past 16 years. If it hadn't, it wouldn't be still around. The author misses little. He is out and about on British racecourses on a daily basis, watching replays of anything he hasn't seen live, scouring every newspaper and website for information, and of course he conducts his own interviews with many leading trainers. Sticking with Mark's top 40 Prospects is the safest bet and there is also the option of subscribing to his five newsletters. Distributed just ahead of key meetings, these lengthy emails cost just £5 each. Mark COSTELLO, The Irish Field, Saturday 3rd October 2009

Top-class guide to jumps season is a real bargain.

It was with perfect timing that Mark Howard’s One Jump Ahead landed on our desk for review the other day. The Irish Field has already given the author its seal of approval by snapping him up to write a weekly column in Better Betting and it was through One Jump Ahead and its flat counterpart Ahead On The Flat that Howard earned his reputation as a good judge. When he is not appearing as a guest on Racing UK, Howard obviously spends his time putting in calls to owners, trainers and other industry sources. Couple this with his own well-researched opinions and you have got the makings of a pretty invaluable book. The cover price remains unchanged at £6.99. Not only does this figure greatly undervalue the product, it puts the book in the same price range as other vastly inferior efforts which don’t deserve to share the same shelf space. Believe me, this is a premium publication and once you give it a try you will remain a subscriber. Mark COSTELLO, The Irish Field, Saturday 27th September 2008

“They say the more things change the more they stay the same – and devoted followers of Mark Howard’s excellent guide to the jumps season can rest assured that while the horses he covers in this annual labour of love come and go, the twin bywords of thorough research and outstanding value for money remain as constant now as they were 14 years ago. Howard can’t pass a stone without turning it to see what gems might lie beneath, and that diligence pours, as ever, from each of the 136 pages. All the favourite sections remain – it’s a great scene-setting, pulse quickening package for just £6.99, and a worthy addition to any jump fans’ collection.” Mark BLACKMAN, RACING POST, 28th September 2007

"A familiar face to Racing UK viewers, Howard is 32 years of age but has been churning out One Jump Ahead – and Ahead On The Flat – annually for the past 14 years. The book hasn’t changed that much over the years. The 2007/2008 edition runs to 136 pages and is absolutely crammed with the latest news on what are likely to be the top horses over sticks this season. Howard clearly has built up a great relationship with all the big trainers – and plenty of smaller ones too – meaning that the reader can trust that the quotes and comments are bang up to date. The inclusion of an interview with Willie Mullins is especially welcome. Other Irish-related content includes profiles of around 40 point-to-pointers and a dozen or so horses who have already shown promise. Mark Howard doesn’t go in for racing photographs. However, this doesn’t make it a dull read as the mine of information is divided into neat segments and there is a useful index of all the horses mentioned at the back. Once again, one of the most useful sections is the interview with bloodstock agent Anthony Bromley, who gives readers a sneak preview of some of the exciting French breds he acquired on behalf of Highflyer Bloodstock during the off-season. The next Kauto Star or Voy Por Ustedes could be lurking in here. Every year I shake my head in disbelief at the low cover price - £6.99. It should be at least twice if not three times that figure, given the huge amount of work put in." Mark COSTELLO, The IRISH FIELD (22/9/07)

"As ever, One Jump Ahead combines Mark's rigorous approach to research with a lightness of style that makes this both an informative and enjoyable read. hope you enjoy a profitable season - with this little gem on the bookshelf, you should." Nick LUCK, Racing UK, Channel 4 Racing

"Mark Howard's annual publication is well established and already has a hardened following. And those punters who do follow advice from the '40 Top Prospects,' 'Stable Gossip,' the ten mini-stable tours or from any of the other sections in this 136 page guide to the season are likely to end up with more than a few coppers in their pocket come April time. A £10 level stake on all selections during the last five years would have yielded a profit of nearly £800. Enough said." DAVID DEW, Racing Post, Monday 13th November 2006

GUIDE STILL A JUMP AHEAD OF HIS RIVALS

"Don't see this as a review of Mark Howard's popular One Jump Ahead guide to the new jumps season - see it more as a reminder to go out and secure your copy as another positive review is hardly needed. Since first publishing his first guide way back when, Mark has deservedly built up a reputation for quality and hard work and those values are again displayed in a book packed with information.....It's hard to find fault about a book that has shown a £772 profit to a tenner on its top 40 in the past five seasons. If you can't get pleasure out of it, it's time to get a different hobby." RACING AHEAD Magazine, October 2006

"Mark Howard was one of the first to latch on to Anthony Bromley as the top judge of French imports and the prolific bloodstock agent again contributes and article. Other regular features such as those focusing on Irish point-to-pointers, high-profile sales purchases and a 10-to-follow appendix are absolutely crammed with horses backed up by favourable quotes from trainers. Mark Howard is a regular guest on one of the racing channels and Nick Luck from Racing UK has supplied him with a very complimentary Foreword. This book is indeed "a little gem" and remains incredibly good value. This is the perfect time to order a copy." Mark Costello, The IRISH FIELD (16/9/06)

"There is a lot to commend Mark Howard, author of One Jump Ahead, for. After all, he has kept his home-grown publication going for 12 years now and gradually refined and improved it along the way. He has done this without drastically altering the format and, crucially, without raising the price more than a couple of pounds in a decade. One Jump Ahead has always been the best 'horses to follow' annual, mainly because Mark Howard is such an astute judge. He has allied this to a lot of hard work making contacts over the years to make One Jump Ahead unmissable for anyone serious about their National Hunt racing. So with that in mind, he has given himself a lot to live up to every season and the 2005/6 edition does not disappoint. It's hard to fault One Jump Ahead, so we won't. At £5.99 it's a real steal - and just backing the Top 40 blind has made a profit in each of the past four seasons - enough said really." RACING AHEAD Magazine, December 2005

"Just like a mature cheese goes perfectly with a fine wine, and a log fire makes a winter evening extra special, Mark Howard's annual guide to the jumps season is perfect accompaniment for all things National Hunt. The Racing UK regular has been producing this guide for 13 years, and this edition is just as good as its predecessors. In fact, it's a little better. Along with his top 40 prospects that always churn out plenty of winners, 45 pages worth of mini stable tours and all the usual features, there is a new section called 'Owners' Enclosure.' Trevor Hemmings is one of those under the spotlight courtesy of his racing manager, who offers an insight into 13 of the Grand National-winning owner's string. This could be the best £5.99 you spend all season." David DEW, Racing Post, Tuesday 13th September 2005

"Mark Howard's compact yet deeply informative preview of the top horses for the season provides punters with a great tool. Howard has developed a successful formula for his guide over 11 editions, and his strike-rate is impressive, giving followers of his Top 40 a better than a 30% return over the previous three seasons. The author is clearly not content however, and the 'Theory Test' - a new feature for this edition - demonstrates that he is trying to improve on his successful product. Howard unearths new horses or those he thinks have untapped potential, rather than stating the obvious about established winners. The reader has enough informed analysis at their fingertips to take on the new National Hunt season with some confidence." Mirio MELLA, Racing Post, Wednesday 15th September 2004

"Such a meticulously researched and expertly analysed betting guide." Lydia HISLOP, BBC TV, RACING UK, The TIMES

"This volume is a most valuable tool of the trade that punters cannot be without. Mark's record in recent years has been quite exceptional." J.A.McGRATH, BBC TV, The Daily TELEGRAPH

"The publication of Mark Howard's One Jump Ahead annual has become a key date for National Hunt followers. The book is nicely produced on good quality paper and is the ideal size for taking to the races. At just £5.99 it is a real bargain and provides superb analysis that will be useful right through the season." RACING AHEAD Magazine, December 2004

"The author always puts a lot of effort into these books and his latest offering boasts a wealth of information on hundreds of National Hunt horses on both sides of the Irish Sea. The book simply cannot be faulted, except by bookmakers who may want it classified as a lethal weapon." Mark COSTELLO, The Irish FIELD

The IRISH ANGLE: WINNERS: ARABELLA BOY (4/1), FOR BILL (3 wins including @ 5/2 in Grade 3 NC), STAR NEUVILLE (7/1)

Quote: STAR NEUVILLE: “He works like a Graded horse at home and more than holds his own against multiple winners like Luska Lad and Hidden Cyclone. He is banker material if repeating his homework.” WINS a bumper at Leopardstown @ 7/1 (28/12/10)

Quote: GILES CROSS: “Victor Dartnall’s eight year old found the ground too quick on his reappearance at Cheltenham and he usually needs his first outing of the season, in any case. His second time out record reads: 12 and his course form is 12F1. Rated 132, he has only run seven times over fences and has won twice on heavy ground (record: 312F13). Off his likely weight of 10st 2lb, he could go well at big odds. Best Price: 40/1 (William Hill)” 2nd @ 12/1 in the Welsh National (8/1/11)

FEBRUARY 2011

What The Clients Said:

“I backed Recession Proof and Quinz from the last Update. It is my best season ever and have backed Ballabriggs at 33/1 for the National thanks to One Jump Ahead.” M.P. Paignton

“Great work in selecting Recession Proof. I’ve just booked a holiday and today’s bet paid for half of it – roll on Quinz next week to pay for the other half.”  D.T., Droitwich

“I had a great bet on Recession Proof and the fact the race was delayed a week gave me time to get more on. You really are top drawer in all your analysis and the very professional way you produce all your services.”  P.B., Brandon

“The best punting February I can remember, culminating in a 117/1 ante-post double, as Quinz passed the post.”  K.R., Preston

“Great end to February. It paid for my golfing holiday to Portugal.”  P.W., Barnard Castle

“Well done. Two great weekends - Recession Proof and Quinz. I had decent (3 figures) bets on both at 14/1 and 12/1.”  B.M., Newmarket

“I have to congratulate you on Recession Proof and then Quinz. I took your advice and had £20 at 12/1. Your info is superb.”  M.F., Eton College

“Very well done with Quinz in the RP Chase. I don’t think you could have been more explicit in your comments about the horse. Many thanks for a great service.” W.S., Burscough

Stable Interview with PAUL WEBBER: WINNERS: CANTLOW (7/2), FIRM ORDER (14/1), KEY CUTTER (7/2), TAFIKA (4/6)

Plus: WINNERS: DANTE’S STORM (4/6), KEENAN’S FUTURE (5/4), RAYA STAR (13/8), SPIRIT SON (4/9, 3/1)

ANTE-POST: RECESSION PROOF Advised @ 14/1 e/w for the Totesport Trophy at Newbury – WINS @ 12/1

QUINZ Advised for the Racing Post Chase at Kempton – WINS @ 8/1

Quote: QUINZ: “The horse I feel is tailormade for the race is the novice QUINZ. I contacted Philip Hobbs last week and he confirmed this is the target and he won’t run beforehand. The seven year old had jumping issues last season but they appear to have been ironed out recording impressive wins over fences at Exeter and Ascot by an aggregate of 37 lengths. No match for Time For Rupert at Cheltenham last time, his overall record suggests he is better going right-handed (65111) and he is a course winner. Officially rated 144, he would have carried 10st 8lb if running in last year’s race off that mark. Good ground would aid his cause and it is worth noting Philip Hobbs’ excellent record in the race (3 wins in the last 12 years). It sounds too good to be true.” WINS the Racing Post Chase @ 8/1 (26/2/11)

CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL 2011

What The Clients Said:

“The Cheltenham Update was incredible this year giving me 10 winners, as well as a £1.50 trixie on First Lieutenant, Junior and Final Approach paying £1895.50. I had to have a lie down during the photo-finish between Final Approach and Get Me Out of Here.” A.P., Colne

“Another fantastic update resulting in all the big winners and ending with a 40/1 winner (Oiseau De Nuit) from your Late Bulletin. A tremendous few days.” J.B., Poole

“Well done – 9 winners and add in ‘Ant & Dec’s’ views – premier class.” R.D., Dublin

The IRISH ANGLE - Declan Phelan: WINNERS: HURRICANE FLY (11/4), QUEVEGA (NAP 5/6), CHICAGO GREY (5/1), FIRST LIEUTENANT (7/1), SIZING EUROPE (10/1), CHELTENIAN (14/1), KNOCKARA BEAU (4th @ 33/1), LONG RUN (7/2)

Quote: SIZING EUROPE: “Sizing Europe is vastly overpriced at 10/1.” WINS the Queen Mother Champion Chase @ 10/1

Late Bulletin: ANTHONY BROMLEY: WINNERS: FINAL APPROACH (10/1) & OISEAU DE NUIT (40/1 in the Grand Annual)

Plus: PLATO: Quote: “I can pass on a strong word for the Henry Cecil trained Plato. He reportedly did a sparkling piece of work on the gallops last Wednesday with the talented but quirky Ajaan.” WINS the Charity Race @ 6/4 (from 7/2)

Report from the Million In Mind Open Day at Paul Nicholls's Ditcheat yard (27/2/10)

Paul NICHOLLS: Quote: AL FEROF: "He is improving all the time and reminds me a lot of Noland before he won the Supreme Novice Hurdle. I think he has an each-way chance.” WINS the Supreme Novice Hurdle @ 10/1

Quote: ZARKANDAR: “Temperament wise, he is a different horse now and I thought he won well at Kempton. I expect him to improve a lot for that and he goes to Cheltenham with a leading chance.” WINS the Triumph Hurdle @ 13/2

He will go very, very well in the Fred Winter. Ruby (Walsh) had a job pulling him up at Taunton last time." WINS the Fred Winter Hurdle @ 4/1

Anthony Bromley tipped up FINAL APPROACH (10/1) & LONG RUN (7/2)

Stable Interview: PHILIP HOBBS: Quote: CHELTENIAN: “Quite a stuffy horse, he has improved and is in very good form at home. He runs in the bumper and is a promising horse.” WINS the Festival bumper @ 14/1

Stable Interview: DAVID PIPE: Quote: BUENA VISTA: “He wants dry weather and is a much better horse on good ground. Three miles is his ideal trip.” WINS the Pertemps Final @ 20/1

Quote: JUNIOR: “We are leaning towards the Kim Muir, in which I would think he will hold a good chance. He appears to like the track and handles most types of ground, although I think he is better on a sound surface.” WINS the Kim Muir by 24 lengths @ 100/30 (from 7/1)

AINTREE GRAND NATIONAL Meeting 2011

What The Clients Said:

“I feel compelled to express my admiration of the effort that clearly went into the Aintree Update. I was extremely impressed both with the depth of detail and the quality of analysis that is contained. It’s refreshing to discover that it’s still possible to find someone who operates with integrity and delivers real insight. You should be very proud of yourself for producing such a first class piece of work.” J.G., London

WINNERS: ZARKANDAR (4/6), NACARAT (7/2), BABY RUN (3/1), SPIRIT SON (3/1), FINIAN’S RAINBOW (10/11), BALLABRIGGS (Advised at 16/1 won @ 14/1)

Stable Interview with DONALD McCAIN: WINNERS: BALLABRIGGS (14/1)

Quote: BALLABRIGGS: He goes for the Grand National and is in fantastic shape at home. I have always loved him and can’t think of a better horse for the race. He is a good neat jumper with a bit of quality and has all the right credentials. The fact he is a strong traveller is another plus point and, if he is in the same form as when winning the Kim Muir at Cheltenham last season, I will be very disappointed if he is not in the shake-up.” WINS the Grand National @ 14/1

Stable Interview with JIM GOLDIE: WINNERS: ARCTIC COURT (11/2)

Quote: ARCTIC COURT: “A consistent horse over hurdles this season, his big target is the three miles handicap hurdle at Ayr’s Scottish National meeting and he won’t run beforehand. Although he has enough speed to win over shorter trips, I think three miles is his ideal trip and he seems to be at his best on decent ground. Third last time behind Kempski and Circus Clown, the handicapper did us a favour dropping him three pounds. I am expecting him to run very well at Ayr.” WINS at Ayr (3 miles) by 10 lengths @ 11/2 (15/4/11)

What the Press Say:

HOWARD'S HARBINGER OF GOOD FORTUNE ON FLAT

"The Sir Michael Stoute trained Harbinger is a best priced 20/1 for the Epsom Derby this morning but followers of Mark Howard's Ahead On The Flat will not have been too surprised to see this Dansili colt emerge from nowhere in recent weeks to be a classic contender. A couple of months ago, when the 2009 edition of Howard's horses to follow book was published, Harbinger was just an unraced three year old colt. However, Howard's card had been marked by Harry Herbert, manager of the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing syndicates: "He could be one to start off in the Wood Ditton Stakes," wrote Howard, and the Dansili colt duly made his debut in that Newmarket race, losing out by just three quarters of a length before winning well at Chester last week. There are many, many more dark 'uns nominated by Howard in this book who have yet to appear this season. There are interviews with a dozen leading British trainers and readers can rest assured that Howard will have got the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth from them. This reviewer has felt that, in recent editions, the Irish section of Ahead On The Flat has been its weakest link. However, the first three of the 12 horses highlighted in the 2009 issue are Age of Aquarius, Beauty O'Gwan and Black Bear Island - all winners in the past week - so credit where it's due." Mark COSTELLO, The Irish Field, Saturday 16th May 2009

STAY AHEAD OF THE GAME WITH ANNUAL WINNER

"Mark Howard has, for the last 12 years, produced this horses to follow guide. When one considers he also produces a jumping guide for that season, the question must be posed as to how much more time can one man devote to selecting horses to follow? It must make substantial inroads into his social life, but Howard's loss is very much the Flat follower's gain. And when he starts a section of the book by saying that last season it provided 21 winners from 68 runners and returned a profit of £402.50 (to £10 stake), it tends to catch the eye more than the big training names who have opened their stable doors to discuss their hopes for the season. Well, it certainly caught my eye, and the News From HQ section had me attempting to commit to memory certain horses for fear of missing out on a big-priced winner or three. Split into categories including maidens in waiting, handicappers to follow and the top 40 prospects, there is no reason why this book should not help you this season. Great value." Ross CLARKE, Racing Post, Monday 20th April 2009

“Howard, a regular guest on Racing UK, has been producing horses to follow books for the past 15 years – he started when he was 18. The author clearly has won the trust and respect of England’s top handlers over the years and many of them appear to have been very generous to Howard in giving their honest assessments of the most promising horses in their care. Personally I have to thank Mark Howard and this book for winning me a share of a bumper Jackpot last week and I have also collected on a few other handsome wagers thanks to the comments contained in this invaluable publication. Supplementing this book, and its National Hunt counterpart One Jump Ahead, are eight updates which Howard produces at various intervals throughout the year, usually preceding major Festival meetings. Each one costs a ridiculously low £6. As a loyal disciple, I have signed up to receive all of them by email and will be flabbergasted if I don’t recoup the outlay many-fold before Royal Ascot is out. In his Autumn Update last year, Howard advised clients to back Authorized at 66/1 and 50/1 for the Epsom Derby. Enough said. Any punter silly enough to ignore information of this quality doesn’t deserve to make money.” Mark Costello, The Irish Field, Saturday 3rd May 2008.

"Books such as Ahead On The Flat, now in its 11th year, with their mix of authoritative editorial comment and trainer interviews, put prospects for the new season into context and help to shine a light on the battalions of relatively dark horses. And of these publications, Ahead On The Flat has consistently proved itself the best while others have failed for lack of stamina or migrated to cyberspace. Including Howard’s top 40 prospects, comprehensive interviews with 13 trainers including Cecil, Charlton, Cumani, Dunlop, Haggas, Gosden and Johnston, Irish and French picks plus the 007-esque combination of maidens in waiting and news from HQ, there’s plenty here to fire the betting imagination. In the end, for the reader, it’s a matter of being selective ad subjective. You can’t just blindly back all the “nice sorts” who trainers “hope will progress” – well, you could, but the consequences will not be pretty. You can, however, sift through for the gems and gauge the levels of enthusiasm, especially for specific targets. What can be said, with certainty, is that Ahead On The Flat will help to clear your view." Robin Gibson, Racing Post, Wednesday 30th April 2008.

"This book is the product of meticulous and enthusiastic research by an author with a proven track record of finding winners and providing insight on the complexities of a new Flat season. Every year, it represents the best value racing book on the high street. You cannot afford to put it back on the shelf." LYDIA HISLOP, Racing UK, The Times.

"As verified by his Racing UK colleague Lydia Hislop in her Foreword, Howard puts a massive amount of effort into his books. In attempting to pinpoint some tasty winners for the coming months, he has paid huge attention to detail, always watching for horses on the upgrade or significant exchanges at horse in training sales. You really can't go wrong with this little gem of a book. Suffice to say, you'll know a lot more when you put it down than when you picked it up." MARK COSTELLO, The Irish Field, Saturday 8th April 2006

"Mark Howard is a regular pundit on Racing UK and a very knowledgeable one. Ahead On The Flat is a fantastic and informative read. It provides an indepth look at the Flat season. It is well worth a read." ANGUS McNAE, Racing UK presenter, April 2005

"The ever-young Mark Howard has been penning this well-respected publication for eight years now, and the first thing that strikes, as always, is the great value for money.
You'd be lucky to have more than five minutes on the blower to some dodgy tipping line for £5.99, but here you have 128 pages of expert opinion and inside information.
There are the 40 top prospects who are expected to plunder some big prizes, but perhaps the most interesting sections are those at the back of the book. A new addition to the line-up is Bestsellers, which focuses on horses sold at end-of-season public sales and are expected to do great things this year.
For those who religiously followed the information provided in last year's top 40 prospects, they will have had a total of 206 bets and notched 50 winners, pocketing a fat profit of £514.40 to a £10 stake. With a stat like that, and the masses of information that this book supplies, it's difficult to find a reason against getting a slice of the action." DAVID DEW, Racing Post, Thursday 28th April 2005

What the Clients Say:

"I am just writing to congratulate you on suggesting Authorized for the Derby, in the Autumn 2006 edition of Ahead On The Flat. I only got on at 10/1, in late March, but yours was one of the best ante-post coups I can remember." R.B.M, Carmarthenshire.

"Thank you very much for giving me an enjoyable Ascot. Using you and your colleague's information, I ended up with 9 winners during the first three days which was phenomenal for such a prestigious meeting." D.M, East Lothian.

Extract from the 2006 Autumn Update

Ante-Post Angle,/p>

Epsom Derby 2007

Peter Chapple-Hyam has had a memorable campaign with his two year olds with Dutch Art providing Royal Ascot success in the Norfolk Stakes followed by a Group 1 win in the Prix Morny in France. Hamoody looked a smart prospect when taking the Richmond Stakes and the stable are optimistic that the once raced AUTHORIZED will develop into a Pattern race performer next year. The Epsom Derby seems a long time away but it may be worth subscribers taking fancy prices about the son of Montjeu tasting big race glory next June.

Bought for 400,000gns, he sports the same colours as Irish 2000 Guineas winner Araafa and made a pleasing debut in the prestigious Haynes, Hansom and Clark Conditions Stakes at Newbury last Friday. Fancied in the market having worked well in recent weeks at home, he travelled like the best horse in the race only to tire inside the final furlong and eventually finished third to the more experienced pair Teslin (had run twice) and Aqaleem. Racing on the outside, he would also have benefited from more cover during the race. Bred to excel when racing over middle distances next year, he is out of a Saumarez mare and shouldn’t have any difficult staying twelve furlongs. High in the pecking order at St Gatien Stables, Chapple-Hyam has already trained one Epsom Derby winner and he is believed to be very excited about Authorized’s future. He is available at 66/1 (Bet365) and 50/1 (Stan James) and I, for one, have snapped the former up.

Advised: AUTHORIZED @ 66/1 (Bet365) for the 2007 Epsom Derby,/p>

AUTHORIZED wins the Racing Post Trophy at Newbury @ 25/1

AUTHORIZED wins the EPSOM DERBY @ 5/4
