Sirwilliamwallace was a horse I highlighted in the Christmas Special and it was therefore disappointing to see him finish only third in a novices' handicap chase at Kelso during the Festive period. Given an ordinary ride on that occasion, Sandy Thomson's reappeared after a break of 62 days and redressed the balance with a comfortable win in a similar event at Ayr on Monday. Making all, he enjoyed an uncontested lead throughout before being driven out for a ten lengths win off a mark of 119 in the two and a half miles event. His trainer, who sent out a treble, believes the Getaway gelding wants three miles. With that in mind, one would expect him to return to the same track next month for the £50,000 three miles novices' handicap chase on Scottish National day (17th April). His form figures at Ayr are 221.
I am working at Catterick on Tuesday for Racing TV and will therefore be back to update the Diary mid week. In the meantime, with the Cheltenham Festival a little over a fortnight away, please head to the Publications section of the site to order your copy of the One Jump Ahead Cheltenham Festival Update, if you haven't already done so.
Also, don't forget the Value Racing Club Cheltenham preview via zoom - we have put together a terrific panel consisting of David Pipe, Tom Scudamore, Stewart Machin, Michael Shinners and Gary O'Brien, plus special guests throughout the evening. If you fancy signing up please email James Couldwell at contact@valueracingclub.co.uk. The preview night is on Friday 12th March.
