Having run well in both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas, Tuesday relished the step up to a mile and a half when narrowly winning the Epsom Oaks on Friday. In doing so, the daughter of Galileo was emulating her sister Minding who won the same event in 2016. Slowly away, Ryan Moore's mount was further back than ideal but she made good headway in the homestraight before battling on gamely to beat the warm favourite Emily Upjohn by short head. It was a very much a case of Tuesday's head being down at the right time. Having stumbled at the start, the runner-up was deemed an unlucky loser but she held every chance inside the final quarter of a mile. The pair look two very good fillies and a rematch appears likely at the Curragh in the Irish version.
Following the successes of Coroebus and Maljoom in the English and German 2000 Guineas, Tuesday provided the Top 40 Prospects with its third Classic victory in 2022.
On Thursday, I was disappointed that another Top 40 entry Roach Power was unable to win on his handicap debut at Leicester. Racing off a mark of 79, Tim Easterby's three year old was in front entering the final furlong but was run out of it late on and beaten a couple of heads. I remain convinced he is a decent horse capable of winning a good race later this year. The stiff nature of the Midlands track beat him on Thursday - I would still be tempted to have a crack at the valuable three year old sprint at York (11th June). He is also worth a go over the minimum trip and it wouldn't be a surprise if he attempts to emulate his brother Art Power in the three year old handicap over five furlongs at Royal Ascot the following week.
