Thank you to those clients who emailed yesterday following Found's victory in the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly. Aidan O'Brien's filly didn't enjoy the best of fortunes in last year's race having met traffic problems but she was given a beautiful ride on this occasion by Ryan Moore and, once pulled off the rail, she never looked like getting beaten. She had run well in the Yorkshire Oaks and Irish Champion Stakes but seemingly thrives in the Autumn. The Breeders' Cup is next and, if in the same form, she will take some stopping. It was an excellent result for the Autumn Update having been advised at 9/1. My other selection New Bay ran creditably but was set an impossible task.
So Mi Dar lost her unbeaten record in the Prix de L'Opera but she remains a filly of tremendous potential. Crowded on the far rail, she eventually saw daylight but the front too had already got first run on John Gosden's charge. Finishing strongly, she found the winning post coming too soon. A step up to twelve furlongs next year will suit and I expect her to be competing in the Arc in twelve months time. She is a top-class filly.
Switching codes, the Top 40 Prospects in One Jump Ahead got off to an undistinguished start with last season's World Hurdle runner-up Alpha Des Obeaux finishing last of five in on his chasing bow at Tipperary. Jumping well, he suddenly came under pressure down the backstraight and immediately dropped out. He then ran on again in the closing stages but was still beaten eighteen lengths. It is worth pointing out Mouse Morris had another short price favourite disappoint at Gowran on Saturday, namely Grotesque. It is possible the yard aren't firing because we know the pair are much better than they showed over the weekend. From a positive of view, Alpha Des Obeaux looks a natural jumper - doesn't lose the faith.
I was most impressed with Whatduhavtoget's bloodless win on her Rules debut at Uttoxeter. Successful in her only Irish point, she joined the Skelton stable during the summer and she looks a high-class mare in the making. A thirteen lengths winner of the two mile maiden hurdle, she had her rivals in trouble from the third last and sauntered clear. A trip to Newbury's Hennessy meeting next month appears likely with the mares' novice hurdle at Cheltenham in March her ultimate target this term. The Presenting filly looks very smart and one to follow.
Half A Dozen Handicappers is a new section in OJA and Innocent Girl ensured the feature got off to the best possible start with a very easy success at Southwell today. A dual winning pointer for Jack Barber, she joined Harry Fry during the summer and made a mockery of a rating of 73 in the opening two mile handicap chase. Entered three times later this week, it will be no surprise to see her turned out quickly. More wins look assured for the former Lucinda Russell trained daughter of King's Theatre.
For those who have already purchased One Jump Ahead, the two horses at the top of page 150 have joined Philip Hobbs and Harry Fry respectively.
