Declan Phelan's Irish Pointers in One Jump Ahead have been in fine form in recent weeks and Neon Wolf (7/4) was the latest winner. A half length scorer of his sole point, he joined Harry Fry during the summer and the Vinnie Roe gelding couldn't have made a better start to his Rules career with a twelve lengths victory in the bumper at Uttoxeter. Unfortunately, the meeting was run in thick fog but from what we were able to see, the five year old couldn't have been more impressive. Sent for home under Noel Fehily, he powered away looking well above average in the process. He looks a most exciting addition to the Fry stable and is very much one to follow when embarking on a hurdling career.
Two horses who featured in last season's Top 40, namely Theatre Territory and Champers On Ice, were also easy winners on the same card. The pair were sent off short price favourites and didn't let their supporters down. The former was very heavy backed before the odd and she looked in a different league to her thirteen opponents in the opening mares' novices' hurdle. The Waley-Cohen owned six year old was ultimately disappointing in bumpers last season but she showed a real aptitude for jumping at the Midlands track and can win a good prize over timber this winter/spring. While her victory was gained over two miles, the former pointer will have no trouble staying further. Despite winning by twenty seven lengths in the three mile beginners' chase, the latter didn't completely convince having made a few minor errors. In fairness though, he ought to be judged in a better race - his next run will hopefully tell us more.
