Regular readers of the Diary will be aware that the previously unraced Kylian was flagged up as a two year old to follow prior to his debut at York's Dante meeting. Karl Burke's colt fluffed his lines on the Knavesmire being colty in the parade ring before finishing third in a five furlongs novice stakes. Beaten by the well regarded Richard Fahey debutant Emperor's Son at Carlisle next time, the son of Invincible Spirit hasn't looked back since translating his impressive homework to the racecourse. An easy four lengths scorer at Newcastle during Royal Ascot week, he produced an even better performance in the Listed Dragon Stakes at Sandown on Friday. Partnered by Ryan Moore, Kylian wasn't the quickest into stride but warmed to his task and, once pulled out, he quickened up in the manner of a smart juvenile to win going away by six lengths. A trip to Goodwood is likely with either the Molecomb (2nd August) or Richmond Stakes (3rd August) possibly on the agenda. Patience is a virtue and well done to those readers who stuck by the fast improving colt who is ready for a further step up in class.
Subscribers to the Royal Ascot Update will be recall that I offered a selection for the Old Newton Cup at Haydock on Saturday. The ground at the Merseyside track was described as good on Friday but will almost certainly have dried out during the afternoon due to the high temperatures. However, there is a lot of rain forecast for the North West on Saturday and therefore expect the ground to be on the soft side - that is ideal for the selection because he doesn't want it too quick. I am hoping the runners will come up the middle to stands side, which will suit, too, because of his draw. I will be disappointed if he doesn't go close. Fingers crossed.
I am working at Haydock tomorrow for what promises to be an excellent afternoon's racing and will therefore update the Diary on Sunday. Next week, I am continuing to work on the new edition of One Jump Ahead and will be starting interviews shortly.
