Former champion trainer Paul Nicholls claimed his sixth win in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter with his pair Politologue and San Benedeto dominating the finish of the Grade 2 event. They had raced against each other in the Grade 1 Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree in the spring with the former appearing unlucky when falling after the last and therefore gifting the race to his stablemate. It was the John Hales owned grey who emerged on top on this occasion scoring by two and a quarter lengths. The drop back to the minimum trip appears to suit the former French trained gelding and the Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown next month will be next. San Benedeto ought to gain compensation, especially when encountering better ground. The Ditcheat pair pulled twenty five lengths clear of the third.
He may not have been a betting proposition but it was good to see Mitchouka make amends for his narrow defeat on his Irish debut at Thurles when landing the juvenile hurdle at Fairyhouse this afternoon by a hard held ten lengths. Featured in the French Revolution section of One Jump Ahead, Gordon Elliott's charge still has something to learn in the jumping department but is a horse with plenty of speed. His victory here almost certainly set up a tilt at the Grade 3 juvenile hurdle over the same course and distance next month, where he is likely to cross swords with the unbeaten Espoir D'Allen.
