Taneen was withdrawn from Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock on Saturday. It proved a blessing in disguise with Roger Varian’s colt rerouted to Leicester yesterday for a 0-95 three year old six furlongs handicap. Well held in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes on his previous start, that run must have brought him on as he produced a blistering display of speed to win going away at the Midlands track. A four and a half lengths winner, the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot has been mentioned but it is hoped his connections elect to stay down the handicap route (depending on his revised mark) and consider the charity sprint at York in mid June – Twilight Son won it last year. Either way, he looks a Pattern horse in the making, granted six furlongs on fast ground.
With Henry Candy’s string slow to come to hand (only 2 winners all year and without a success since the 30th April), I thought Bounce ran a cracker in the same race. A Kempton maiden winner last term, she showed a lot of speed before tiring late on. Rated 90, she is another possible for the valuable six furlongs event at York next month, although she wouldn’t look out of place over five furlongs.
