The George Boughey trained King Lear is featured in the Unraced Three Year Olds section in Ahead On The Flat and the well bred son of Galileo got off the mark at the second time of asking at Nottingham on Tuesday. Out of Group 1 and Royal Ascot winner Amazing Maria, he was previously owned by the late Sir Robert Ogden and in training with Rebecca Menzies but never ran for his former connections. Bought for 50,000gns at the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale in August last year, he shaped with plenty of promise on his belated racecourse debut at Newmarket last month when a running on fourth. Reappearing less than a month later at Colwick Park, he was prominent throughout under James Doyle before striking the front with over two furlongs to run. Pulling away for a four lengths win, King Lear could be above average and is the sort to develop into a useful handicapper at least. Purchased by Sam Haggas of Hurworth Bloodstock, he looks another shrewd acquistion.
King Lear's win follows on from another previously unraced three year old trained by Boughey highlighted in AOTF, namely Moon Spirit (9/2) who scored at Bath last month. Once again, bought by Hurworth Bloodstock for £52,000 in March, he was a Godolphin cast off who finished fourth on his first outing at HQ in June before confirming the promise with a half length win last month.
I am currently working on the York Ebor Festival Update, which will be emailed to clients next Monday (21st August). If you haven't ordered a copy, please head to the Publications section of the site.
