Continuous outclassed his rivals in the St Leger at Doncaster providing Aidan O'Brien with his seventh win in the final Classic of the season. The son of Heart's Cry came from last to first to win the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last month and seemingly relished the step up to a mile and six at Town Moor. Pulling clear under Ryan Moore, he registered a two and three quarters of a length win and set up a possible tilt at the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp at the beginning of October.
It was disappointing to see Bluestocking reeled in close home in the Listed event which opened the card at Chester. Ralph Beckett's filly travelled well before taking over early in the homestraight and looked set for a comfortable success. However, Al Qareem rallied well and regained the advantage inside the final furlong. A neck separated the pair and it put the seal on a frustrating campaign for the runner-up. The winner hadn't been seen since disappointing at Meydan in the spring and, while he is a talented horse, the four year old had looked out of sorts earlier in the year. This was one that got away.
The curtain comes down on Doncaster's St Leger meeting with a low key fourth day, which has been transferred from the Wednesday - the fact ITV aren't covering it speaks for itself. Value Racing Club racing manager James Couldwell sent me a text on Saturday evening about their runner in the Legends race at 3.00pm, namely Mr Cuddihy who is ridden by Jason Edmunds. The rules for the race are, according to the BHA website, "Riders will be allocated at Doncaster Racecourse on Friday 15th September." Therefore it is interesting to note both Jamie Osborne and Gay Kelleway's runners will be ridden by their trainers, which is some coincidence, and according to Mick Appleby, who has enjoyed a good week on Town Moor this week, Robbie Power was booked for Lion's Dream on Tuesday. In addition, Tom Scudamore rides the Roger Brookhouse owned I Still Have Faith - the pair tasted Cheltenham Festival success together - and Paul Hanagan is on board Biplane who he has ridden to victory twice. In the words of Kevin Keegan, 'I would love it' if James wins the race because he has played by the rules.
