10 of the 15 winners at Chepstow's two day meeting over the weekend were featured in One Jump Ahead, including half a dozen on Sunday. Gumball made it two out of two since joining Philip Hobbs when taking the opening juvenile hurdle by eight lengths from another French import Malaya. The No Risk At All gelding didn't jump particularly well but still proved too strong for the runner-up and may head to Wetherby for the Wensleydale Hurdle early next month. As discussed previously, he looks a smart recruit.
Mia's Storm (9/2) was rated 137 over hurdles but Alan King's mare looks set to reach a considerably higher mark over fences, judged on his chasing bow at the Welsh track. The former pointer appreciated the step up to three miles at Haydock last spring and she won by three and a quarter lengths over the same trip on her first run over the larger obstacles. She jumped well thoroughout and had too much pace for the runner-up Elegant Escape. Granted decent ground, the seven year old can develop into a very useful staying novice chaser.
Tom Lacey left us in no doubt on page 71 of OJA that he rated Kateson (16/1) very highly and the four year old made a winning start to his career in the first division of the bumper. Interestingly, his dam Silver Kate (won 6 times) scored in a bumper on her debut and was a three times at Chepstow. Partnered by Richard Johnson, the Black Sam Bellamy gelding showed distinct signs of greenness during the early stages but warmed to his task and the further he went, the better he peformed. His trainer suggested afterwards that Kateson will contest a Listed bumper at Ascot pre-Christmas. A stayer in the making, he is another fine prospect. I am a big fan of the stable.
