Brian Ellison certainly pointed us the right direction regarding debutant Shearling in the concluding fillies' 'junior' bumper at Warwick. The Malton handler spoke in glowing terms on page of 64 of One Jump Ahead about the daughter of Rail Link and she landed something of a gamble at the Midlands track. She did remarkably well to win, too, having encountered traffic problems before the home turn. Once in the clear, she quickened up well to reel in True Self to prevail by a head. She is a decent filly with a bright future.
Value Racing Club were at it again last Saturday when West of The Edge was a bloodless winner of the three miles handicap chase at Wetherby. Bought for 14,000gns at the Doncaster May Sales, the Westerner gelding made a mockery of his rating of 101 on his first run for Dr Richard Newland. Partnered by Harry Skelton, he was cantering throughout and readily pulled seven lengths clear. Needless to say, the handicapper has had his say and the eight year old has been subsequently raised twelve pounds. He looks another bargain buy for his progressive syndicate. As discussed in the OJA Update last week, VRC have sent their first horse to Dan Skelton. Royal Reef won 4 of his 11 races on the Flat for William Knight and is officially rated 83 on the level. Bought for 33,000gns at last month's Newmarket Horses in Training Sale, he is a potentially exciting recruit to the novice hurdle ranks. Please visit the syndicate's website ValueRacingClub.co.uk for more details of how to get involved in racehorse ownership at a realistic price.
