Art Power provided Tim Easterby with his sixth Royal Ascot winner in the opening five furlongs handicap on Friday producing a devastating display of raw speed. The son of Dark Angel had impressed on his reappearance at Newcastle and it was a similar story here on his handicap debut blowing away his opponents to win hard held by three and a half lengths off a mark of 97. Pattern races will be next with his connections expected to keep him to the minimum trip for the time being. It will be interesting to see if he is as effective on a faster surface because he is particularly well suited by slow ground.
Golden Horde brought the strongest form into the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup and Clive Cox's three year old produced an equally impressive display winning by a length and a half. The son of Lethal Force had mixed it with Earthlight in the highest company in the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes as a juvenile. Prominent throughout, he ran on strongly to beat the US raider Kimari. His trainer has already won the July Cup with his sire and Harry Angel in recent years and it would be no surprise to see this talented colt do likewise next month. He is a top-class sprinter.
Following an excellent start to the day with Art Power advised in the Royal Ascot Update at 3/1, it went downhill thereafter. Fingers crossed we can end on a high note on Saturday.
