The drying ground and a plethora of non runners meant interesting looking cards at Fontwell and Worcester quickly developed into ordinary ones during Wednesday. However, there is no point risking promising young horses at this stage in the season because rain will doubtless arrive at some stage during the next few weeks. Regular readers of One Jump Ahead will be aware that Sam Barton featured in the Top 40 Prospects last season - Emma Lavelle's Black Sam Bellamy gelding failed to win any of his seven starts over fences. Typically, he got off the mark over fences at Worcester winning the staying novices' handicap chase by a neck.
Switching codes, champion trainer Charlie Appleby and champion jockey William Buick dominated proceedings at Newmarket. The pair won 4 of the 7 races, including Regal Honour's victory in the seven furlongs novice stakes for colts and gelding. Highlighted as an unraced juvenile to follow in the Autumn Update, the son of Dubawi, who cost 625,000gns as a yearling, shaped with a bundle of promise on his debut over the same C&D last month when a staying on third. A half-brother to Group 1 winner Rizeena, he confirm the view when staying on strongly to beat market rival Greek Order inside the final furlong. Indeed, it was a similar performance to his initial start looking green during the first half of the race and taking a while to hit full stride. However, he relished the rising ground was comfortably on top at the line. Roger and Harry Charlton's runner-up looks above average and Regal Honour can only improve over at least a mile next term. He is another exciting prospect for Godolphin in 2023.
