The beautifully bred Sun Bear (3/1) provided the Maidens In Waiting section in Ahead On The Flat with another winner. A daughter of Dubawi out of the Lancashire and Irish Oaks winner Great Heavens, John Gosden's filly had failed to fire on her reappearance at Kempton last month. However, following a break of six weeks, she returned to action at Windsor on Monday evening and produced a much improved effort. Positioned on the rails, Robert Havlin's mount quickened inside the final furlong to win by a length. While this win was gained over a mile, a return to longer trips shouldn't be an issue given her breeding. There are 17 horses in the Maidens In Waiting feature and 10 have now won since racing resumed at the beginning of June.
Subscribers to the Royal Ascot Update will be aware that I tipped Nahaarr in the Silver Wokingham Stakes last month. William Haggas' four year old finished third having been left in front some way from home before being run out of it inside the final furlong. Back in action at Newbury on Sunday, the son of Dark Angel landed some tidy bets to win the six furlongs handicap hard held by two and a quarter lengths. Scoring off a mark of 94, he booked his place in the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood in the process. Granted good or faster ground, it will take a good horse to beat him. Longer-term, it will be a surprise if he isn't competing in Pattern race sprints. His stable are in blistering form with 14 winners from their last 54 runners (26%) during the past fortnight.
