It was an excellent first day for the York Ebor Festival Update with 3 winners, namely Valdermoro (advised @ 7/1), Logician (advised @ 11/8) and Japan (advised @ 11/2), plus Arecibo (advised @ 12/1 - 3rd) and Infrastructure (3rd @ 10/1.
The Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes lived up to the billing with a thrilling finish which saw Japan edge out Crystal Ocean by a head. Aidan O'Brien's colt was dropping back to ten furlongs for the first time and he stayed on strongly to edge out Sir Michael Stoute's Prince of Wales's Stakes winner. The Irish Champion Stakes is likely to be next followed by the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe. The son of Galileo, who finished a close third in the Epsom Derby, is thriving at present and improving with each start. The runner-up is a tremendous horse who has been competing at the highest level for the last three seasons. Sir Michael Stoute has done a magnificent job with the Sea The Stars colt.
Logician, who is featured in the Unraced Three Year Olds section of Ahead On The Flat, has come a long way in a short space of time. John Gosden's colt made it four out of four in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur by a length and three quarters win and is now clear favourite for the St Leger next month. Successful in a handicap off a mark of 90 at Newbury last time, he was the lowest rated runner in the line-up but proved too strong for his four rivals winning decisively. A well bred colt, he gives the impression he will be even better over a mile and a six and will be the one they all have to beat on Town Moor.
