Brian Ellison sent out Nietzsche to win the Listed Hillhouse Quarry Chase at Ayr last Friday and the Malton trainer was unlucky not to win the concluding two miles handicap hurdle at Perth on Thursday with El Jefe. Rated 53 on the Flat, the four year old had four races on testing ground over hurdles earlier in the season. Making his handicap debut off a mark of 104, the Born To Sea gelding appreciated the much quicker surface at the Scottish track and led approaching the second last. Unfortunately, his rider didn't notice Mr Melda after the last and was caught napping as Tom Lacey's charge swept past. This was a missed opportunity and his trainer won't have been impressed. Two miles on good ground on a sharp track is ideal for El Jefe. Compensation hopefully awaits.
