We almost certainly saw Enable racing in the UK for the last time as John Gosden's brilliant filly made it ten Group 1 victories when claiming the Yorkshire Oaks for a second time. The daughter of Nathaniel made all the running under Frankie Dettori before beating Magical by two and three quarters of a length. It is the fourth time Enable has beaten the Ballydoyle runner. The Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe is next as she bids to win the twelve furlongs event for a third time in October.
The most impressive winner on day two of the York Ebor Festival was Mums Tipple in the valuable sales race. The son of Footstepsinthesand had won on his debut at Ascot - the runner-up Molatham runs in the Convivial Maiden Stakes at York on Friday - and the form had been franked with the fifth winning easily since. Richard Hannon's charge was quickly into stride under Ryan Moore and dictated from an early stage. Shaken up with a couple of furlongs to run, he bounded clear to register an eleven lengths win. The runner-up is rated 98 which gives us an indication of how good a performance it was. Entered in the likes of the Champagne, Mill Reef, Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes, he has booked his place in Pattern company next time and it will be interesting to see how far he can go. It was a breathtaking display.
It was a relatively quiet day on the tipping front as far as the Update was concerned. Salayel ran well in fourth in the concluding fillies' handicap but may have paid for sitting too close to a strong gallop. Roger Varian's filly held every chance approaching the final furlong before her effort flattened out late on. It has been a decent couple of days though with 4 winners advised at 7/1, 11/2, 5/1 and 11/8 from only eight races. Having had a day off on Wednesday, I am heading back to York on Friday and Saturday for Racing TV. Fingers crossed we can get a few more winners over the next couple of days.
Switching codes, I received a text early this morning from champion trainer Paul Nicholls informing me of two new recruits from France who are owned by J.P.McManus. I have therefore added them to Paul's interview in One Jump Ahead. The Ditcheat outfit have a formidable team for the season ahead.
