The Top 40 Prospects in One Jump Ahead continues to churn out the winners at regular intervals. The latest winner came courtesy of Waiting Patiently who was an emphatic seven lengths winner on his chasing debut at Sedgefield. The former Keith Reveley trained gelding was having his first run for Malcolm Jefferson and the five year old appeared to have been let in lightly off a mark of 123 in the 0-135 novices' handicap chase at the County Durham track. I spoke to Brian Hughes about him at Haydock on Saturday and he reported the Flemensfirth gelding had schooled well on Thursday morning. Dropping back in trip and racing on the softest ground he had encountered in his career, Waiting Patiently readily picked up long time leader Burtons Wel between the final two fences and won hard held (available at 4/1 last night he returned Evens favourite). The Jefferson stable is blessed a terrific team of youngsters at present, especially amongst the novice chasing ranks with Cloudy Dream, Double W's and Waiting Patiently. I think the last named will improve again when returning to two and a half miles and he could develop into a realitstic contender for the novices' handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Malcolm arguably should have won the race in 2014 with Attaglance.
It is early days in the season but the Top 40 Prospects couldn't have made a much better start with so many exciting prospects. Alpha Des Obeaux, Altior, Claimantakinforgan, Cloudy Dream, Cruiseaweigh, O O Seven, Robin Roe, Samcro, Sumkindofking and Waiting Patiently all look highly promising young horses.
Declan Phelan's Irish Pointers section produced yet another winner, too, with Daklondike (2/1) outstaying his rivals in the two mile novices' hurdle at Lingfield. A half-brother to the stable's former Cheltenham Festival winner Great Endeavour, the ex-pointer was bought for £140,000 last spring. Well held in two runs on good ground for his new connections, David Pipe's charge seemingly appreciated the much softer conditions at the Surrey track and he promises to stay further, too.
