It was another good day for the Top 40 Prospects in One Jump Ahead with Phoenix Way (4/1) winning narrowly on his belated seasonal return at Huntingdon on Friday. Harry Fry's former pointer was stepping up to three miles for the first time under Rules and he was given a confident ride by Barry Geraghty. Leading close home off a mark of 133, he will presumably head straight to Cheltenham in March for the Pertemps Final, on the assumption in rises sufficiently in the weights to ensure his place in the line up. Still lightly raced, the seven year old looks set to remain ahead of the handicapper for the time being.
Pogue (4/1) provided the Handicap Snips section in OJA with a winner in the opening novices' handicap chase at Doncaster. Donald McCain's charge had proved frustrating earlier in the season but got his act together on Town Moor. Runner-up over hurdles at Kelso on his first outing this term, he filled the same position over fences at Catterick last time. The Stowaway gelding made all and his trainer feels he will be even better over further.
Not to be outdone, Bromley's Best Buys were also amongst the winner at the South Yorkshire track with Glynn (15/8) scoring by eleven lengths on his Rules debut. Bought for £85,000 in April, the Winged Love gelding won his only Irish point last season and was returning from an absence of 300 days. He looks capable of defying a penalty and will make a smashing novice chaser next season.
Three horses featured in last year's Top 40, namely Gaelik Coast (20/1), Phoenix Way (4/1) and Pogue (4/1) all won on Friday.
