Sam Twiston-Davies gave Our Power an inspired ride to win the Coral Trophy Handicap Chase at Kempton on Saturday. Advised at 12/1 in the February Update, the Sam Thomas trained gelding was returning from a break of 119 days but had proved earlier this season that he goes well fresh. Positioned in midfield for much of the contest, the eight year old came under pressure after the fifth last but kept responding to his rider's urgings. Having been entered in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury earlier in the season, stamina is his strong suit and that proved the difference as he reeled in Flegmatik on the run-in to prevail by a neck. It was eleven lengths back to the third. Thomas has proved himself very adept with staying chasers, including his Welsh National winner Iwilldoit and Our Power was winning for a fourth time over fences from only eight starts. It was an excellent result for followers of the February Update - thank you to those clients who have emailed since, it is much appreciated.
I hope clients retained the faith in Thanksforthehelp (9/2) who finally came good at Chepstow during the same afternoon. David Pipe's grey has been highlighted a few times, including in the November Update, because I have been convinced he was well handicapped. Absent since finishing fourth at Wetherby on Boxing Day, the J.P.McManus owned gelding underwent wind surgery and it certainly appeared to have the desired effect with the six year old making a mockery in the Pertemps qualifier at the Welsh track. Tackling three miles for the first time, Kevin Brogan enjoyed an armchair ride before pushing him clear after the second last. Expect a significant rise in the ratings but he is still lightly raced and unexposed over staying distances. The better ground may have helped, too.
