Regular subscribers will be aware that I have been suggesting Ashington is a well treated hurdler for at least twelve months now. Formerly handled by John Quinn, he was transferred across Malton during the winter and joined Brian Ellison. Disappointing on his first start for his new handler at Musselburgh's trials meeting last month, the Canford Cliffs gelding finally came good at Sedgefield on Thursday. Good ground is crucial to the six year old and he appeared to be suited by the step up to two and a half miles for the first time. Making all under Sean Quinlan, he stayed on well to beat Minella Trump by three and a quarter lengths with nearly twenty lengths back to the third. Hopefully he can find some consistently now and win again - the underfoot conditions will hold the key.
