It has been an excellent week for York Ebor Update subscribers with three more winners on Saturday, which took the total for the four days on the Knavesmire to 8. Thank you to those clients who have emailed over the last few days, it is much appreciated.
Hamish (advised at 16/1) appreciated the step up to a mile and six in the Melrose Handicap on Saturday. Related to the likes of Harris Tweed and Vow, William Haggas' gelding has come a long way in a short space of time. Beaten over a mile on his debut at Thirsk in the spring, he failed to enter the stalls on one occasion at Redcar but hasn't looked back since. Allocated a mark of 92, he was given a patient ride by James Doyle but quickened up well to beat the equally promising First In Line by three parts of a length. Guaranteed a place in next year's SkyBet Ebor, I heard a quote of 33/1 immediately afterwards. Admittedly, it is a long time until next year and a lot can happen in the meantime but that could look a huge price next summer. The runner-up remains a horse with a bright future, too, possibly over slightly shorter trips.
I thought Alligator Alley produced a remarkable performance to win the Listed Roses Stakes. Joseph O'Brien's colt is a half-brother to nine and ten furlongs horses but he is all speed and looks a smart sprinter in the making. The son of Kingman was badly hampered soon after the start and was still nearly last with a furlong and a half to run. However, Donnacha O'Brien's mount quickened up and won going away by a length. Ordinary horses don't produce performances like that. Races such as the Group 2 Flying Childers at Doncaster (13th September) and Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket (11th October) are obvious future targets.
Talking of sprinters, the Michael Dods trained Que Amoro (9/1) is thriving at present and has benefited from a change of tactics. The daughter of Es Que Love made all at York last month winning by seven lengths off a mark of 80. Subsequently raised ten pounds, she repeated the feat in the concluding five furlongs apprentice handicap on Saturday with a similar display of lightning speed. Phil Dennis' mount was quickly into stride and had her rivals in trouble by halfway. She maintained the gallop scoring by a length and three quarters. It will be interesting to see how far she can go but her raw speed alone will ensure she wins more races. She was a pleasure to watch and a fitting way to end four fabulous days on the Knavesmire.
The 8 winners in the Update were Valdermoro (advised @ 7/1), Logician (advised @ 11/8), Japan (advised @ 11/2), Mums Tipple (advised @ 5/1), Treat (advised @ 5/2), Hamish (advised @ 16/1), Alligator Ally (11/8) and Que Amoro (9/1), plus Royal Crusade (5/6) scored at Newmarket on Friday. There are plenty of other horses to follow within the Update, especially those unraced juveniles, plus a selection for the Lanark Silver Bell at Hamilton on Friday evening.
The third and final Ahead On The Flat Update - the Autumn Update - will be emailed to clients on Thursday 26th September. Please head to the Publications section of the site to order a copy. It is £6.00.
