In addition to being featured in the Unraced Three Year Old section of Ahead On The Flat, Desert Icon was William Haggas' horse to follow in his Talking Trainers interview (page 73). The son of Sea The Stars broke his maiden on his second start at Pontefract during the spring before finding a mile too sharp at Newmarket last time. Stepped up to twelve furlongs for his handicap debut off a mark of 85, he was well supported beforehand in the Bibury Cup at Salisbury. Held up early on, he was given a typically excellent ride by Ryan Moore as he made stealthy headway before leading approaching the final furlong. Staying on well, he had enough in reserve to score by a neck from Newbury winner Kiefer. Desert Icon is the sort to continue to improve with racing and it would be no surprise to see him competing in Pattern races only day.
