It has been a long time coming but it was good to see Mazzini finally show what he is capable of at Chelmsford on Tuesday evening. James Fanshawe's gelding had proved frustrating to follow this term, including at Newcastle on his previous start. However, granted a favourable draw and fitted with cheekpieces for the first time, the four year old showed his true worth with an impressive display in the six furlongs handicap, destroying his ten rivals by upwards of four and a half lengths. Breaking quickly, the result was never really in doubt. Still a maiden on the turf, all three of his career wins have been gained on artificial surfaces but there is no reason why he can't transfer the same level of form to the grass. Despite a likely hefty rise in the ratings, fingers crossed he can continue to progress and enjoy a lucrative second half of the season. His talent has never been in doubt and his stable continues in fine form.
