I am still working on One Jump Ahead and therefore haven't caught up on all the action from Doncaster and Leopardstown, which will capture the headlines in the racing press on Sunday.  Congratulations to Value Racing Club who enjoyed their 250th winner courtesy of Nibras Gold in the jump jockeys handicap at Chester. Trained by James Owen, the eight year old finished a close second in the twe...

The second day of Doncaster St Leger meeting got underway with the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes over seven furlongs. Both Forbidden Fire and Rock Montreal were highlighted as juveniles to follow in the York Ebor Update and the pair dominated the finish. It was the impeccably bred Andrew Balding trained filly who came out on top by a head having hit the front over two furlongs out. Oisin Murphy's ...

The unbeaten Musical Times provided the highlight on day one of the St Leger Festival at Doncaster on Thursday. Godolphin's filly had won twice over seven furlongs at Newmarket and Yarmouth during the summer. Off the track for 70 days, the daughter of Lope De Vega relished the step up to a mile in the Group 2 May Hill Stakes annihilating ten opponents by upwards of seven and a half lengths. Charli...

I contacted Jamie Snowden on Mond...

Top 40 entry Erdenali (9/2) won the Group 1 Prix du Moulin at Longchamp on Sunday on only his fifth career start. Unraced at two, the Caravaggio gelding won a Listed event at Deauville in late June and ought to have followed up in a Group 3 at Chantilly next time. However, the Francis-Henri Graffard trained three year old met trouble in running and finished on the bridle in a close third. Des...

Regular readers of Ahead On The Flat will be aware that Almeraq featured in the Top 40 Prospects in 2025. Having impressed when making a mockery of a rating of 90 in a six furlongs handicap at Ayr in July last year, the Shadwell owned colt suffered a horrible fall in a Listed event at York which resulted in Jim Crowley never riding again. William Haggas and his team have done a superb job bringing...

On Wednesday, I made my penultimate trip of the year to Hamilton Park and, while the weather had an Autumnal feel to it and a crowd in keeping with a lower Scottish league fixture, it was an enjoyable trip nevertheless. Aside from catching up with the latest gossip from my esteemed colleague Gordon Brown - he's not called GB News for nothing - the highlight of the evening was the opening five furl...

Once again, thank you very much to those clients who have ordered One Jump Ahead and the Updates during the last few days. The plan is to take the book to the printers in a couple of weeks and then all being well, it will be published towards the end of September. While I have still got a fair bit to type up, there is some tremendous information - only today, I spoke to a leading bloodstock agent ...

Regular readers of Ahead On The Flat will recall that Al Aasy featured in the Top 40 Prospects in 2020 winning twice, including the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy. The gelded son of Sea The Stars has been a tremendous horse for Shadwell and William Haggas over the years and he gained his first win at Group 2 level at Deauville on Sunday at the age of nine. Leading in the dying strides under Pierre-Charles...

If anyone is in any doubt as to how informative stable interviews are, my visit to Roger Varian's yard in February is a prime example. Despite only beating one rival in the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes at Newbury in September, Michael Jarvis' former assistant was adamant that Kokbastau (9/2) was a very good colt describing him as 'a proper horse' on page 109. Reported to have suffe...
