It is a relatively quiet start to the week for National Hunt fans with a sole meeting at Ayr on Monday and Southwell on Tuesday. Both Nicky Richards and Lucinda Russell were responsible for a brace of winners at the former venue.  The most interesting race on the card was the two miles three novice hurdle which was won narrowly by Irish import Famous Bridge. A half-brother to Cheltenham Fest...

There was something of an upset in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury on Saturday with Cloudy Glen winning the prestigious event at odds of 33/1. A former winner of the Southern National, the Venetia Williams trained gelding was making his reappearance and having his first run since undergoing wind surgery. I recall fancying the eight year old for the Grand National Trial at Haydock last season but h...

Nicky Henderson maintained his stranglehold on the two miles maiden hurdle on the opening day of Newbury's Winter Carnival. The Seven Barrows outfit have won the event five times in the last eight years as expensive purchase Jonbon made an excellent start to his hurdles career with a six lengths victory. With no one keen to lead during the early stages, the former Irish pointer jumped his way to t...

Former champion jockey Brian Hughes rode his 100th winner of the season when steering Dreams of Home to victory in the novices' handicap chase at Ayr. The former winning Irish pointer had only finished seventh over two and a half miles on his chasing bow at Carlisle last month and was dropping back in trip here. Making all, the Jet Away gelding jumped slickly and found plenty for pressure when cha...

A Plus Tard became the first Irish trained winner of the Betfair Chase at Haydock when routing the opposition by upwards of 22 lengths. Last season's Cheltenham Gold Cup winner was registering his third Grade 1 victory and is now as short as 7/2 to go one better in steeplchasing's blue riband next spring. The Kapgarde gelding toyed with his rivals jumping and travelling strongly throughout. Rachae...

Jonjo O'Neill is putting together a strong team of youngsters and Springwell Bay looks a smart recruit to Jackdaws Castle, judged on his wide margin win the bumper at Market Rasen on Thursday. The Kayf Tara gelding had finished runner-up in the Goffs Land Rover Bumper at the Punchestown Festival last spring (third won easily at Ayr on Monday) before being bought a couple of days later for €15...

Hartur D'Oudairies looked a first class prospect when winning on his hurdles debut at Warwick on Wednesday. Featured in the Top 40 Prospects in One Jump Ahead, the four year old was a ready winner of a French bumper (form has worked out well) for Daniela Mele nearly a year ago before being snapped up by J.P.McManus. Given plenty of time to acclimatise, the Kapgarde gelding had impressed in his hom...

There were some interesting novice events on Tuesday with Soft Risk getting the ball rolling on his hurdles debut at Ayr. Nicky Richards' five year old had impressed when winning a bumper on his racecourse bow over course and distance in May and is held in high regard at Greystoke. With the exception of the second last, his jumping was good and Brian Hughes' mount never looked like getting beaten....

The most interesting race on Monday was the two miles novice hurdle at Leicester with the finish being dominated by two ex-Flat racers. Zabeel Champion won 6 of his 14 races on the Flat for Mark Johnston earning an official rating of 103 in the process. Placed in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, he went through the sales ring in early September and was bought by agent Tom Malon...

Paul Nicholls and Dan Skelton dominated the third and final day of Cheltenam's November meeting with five winners between them. The champion trainer's hat-trick comprised of Threeunderthrufive, Yala Enki and Timeforatune - the last named one of the Bromley's Best Buys section in One Jump Ahead.
