Northern Ticker (12/1 into 5/2) was the subject of a major gamble in the Listed Two YearOld Trophy at Redcar on Saturday and Michael Dods' runner looked set to prevail when hitting the front over a furlong out. Paul Mulrennan's mount was outstayed late on though by the fast improving and more experienced Candy finishing a close third. Advised in the Autumn Update, the Mehmas gelding remains a smart prospect for next year with his connections believing he will better still as a three year old. The draw proved significant with the first six home emerging from stalls 5,2,3,7,8 and 4. The Richard Fahey trained Uncle Don fared best of those drawn high (stall 13) finishing seventh and he is another to keep an eye on in the future because we almost certainly seen the best of him.
Top 40 entry Mistral Star ran a blinder in the Group 1 Prix de Royalieu at Longchamp finishing third on what was probably here final appearance before being retired to the paddocks. Hughie Morrison's mare was a Listed winner at Newmarket during the summer before performing creditably in the Yorkshire Oaks in August. Stepping up in trip at the Parisian track, she raced keenly in rear early on before making good headway on the hometurn. Staying on strongly on the outside, the four year old was beaten around a length. She is a smart filly who deserves to have won more races this term.
Sardinian Warrior did provide the Top 40 with a winner later in the day at Southwell. The John and Thady Gosden trained colt was gaining his second win at the Nottinghamshire track having won impressively in the spring. Absent since due to a setback, he defied a penalty in convincing fashion in the one mile novice stakes. Sent to the front from the outset, the son of Saxon Warrior stretched clear in the home straight to win by three lengths. He is a smashing prospect for next year with Pattern race aspirations.
Sunfall (18/1) has proven a terrific filly for the Maidens In Waiting section in Ahead On The Flat with William Haggas' three year old gaining her fourth win of the season in the Listed October Stakes at Ascot. The grey daughter of Twilight Son was tackling Pattern company for the first time off a rating of 86 and she displayed an excellent attitude to regain the advantage close home.
