It was the first day of the Newmarket July meeting on Thursday with Charlie Appleby and William Buick dominating proceedings with a treble. Top 40 entry Opera Ballo ran out an impressive winner of the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes gaining his second success in Pattern company. An emphatic scorer in the Listed Heron Stakes at Sandown in late May, he defied his penalty with an even better display here pulling nearly three lengths clear. The Godolphin runner is learning to settle and has been much more tractable on his last two outings travelling well throughout. Quickening away inside the final furlong, he is set to return to Pattern company next time. Entered in the Group 2 Prix Guillaume D'Orano at Deauville (16th August) and Group 1 Prix Jacques Le Marois at the same track (17th August), a race such as the Group 3 Strensall Stakes at York (23rd August) over nine furlongs could be another option. The extra furlong shouldn't be an inconvenience nad he is an exciting prospect. His win was the second in as many days for the Top 40 following High Degree's narrow success at Ffos Las on Wednesday evening.
The unbeaten Zavateri (18/1) features in Bromley's Best Buys in AOTF and the Eve Johnson Houghton trained juvenile followed up his debut win at Salisbury by claiming some notable scalps in the Group 2 July Stakes. A colt by Without Parole, he looks very well bought by Anthony Bromley for only 35,000gns. Held up early on, Charlie Bishop produced his mount on the outside leading inside the final furlong. The Coventry Stakes runner-up filled the same position with four previous winners further back. The Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood (29th July) over seven furlongs could be next.
