Thank you very much to those clients who have emailed on Saturday following Jan Brueghel's victory in the St Leger at Doncaster - it is greatly appreciated and I will endeavour to reply to all of them, in between proof reading One Jump Ahead. Advised at 16/1 in the Royal Ascot Update, Aidan O'Brien's well bred colt has come a long way in a short space of time having only made his racecourse debut in late May. The son of Galileo had won Group 3 events at the Curragh and Goodwood and relished the step up to a mile and six on Town Moor. Given a beautiful ride by Sean Levey, he overcame greenness and racing a touch keenly early on to wear down stablemate Illinois in the closing stages to prevail by a neck. A tremendous prospect for next year, it was a brilliant result all round.
Less than half an hour earlier, Economics extended his winning run to four by gaining his first Group 1 success in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. A dual Group 2 winner beforehand, the son of Night of Thunder raced on the outside for much of the contest before showing a willing attitude to fend off the challenge of Auguste Rodin. The Top 40 entry scored by a neck and his win set up a tilt at the Qipco Champions Stakes at Ascot next month. The three year old was providing William Haggas with his second Group 1 winner in a week following Montassib's victory at Haydock last weekend.
Finally, to round off an excellent afternoon for followers of Ahead On The Flat and the Updates, Lady Roxby (6/4) won by four lengths on her nursery debut at Musselburgh. Highlighted as an unraced juvenile to follow in the Royal Ascot Update, Bryan Smart's expensive breeze-up buy appreciated the drop back to five furlongs and looked a well handicapped filly in the process off a mark of 60.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend and raise a glass to Jan Brueghel and Economics.
