Having not been seen since trouncing his opponents in the Dante Stakes at York in May, it was great to see Top 40 entry Economics back in action in France on Thursday. Off the track for 91 days, the big strapping son of Night of Thunder lined up in the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano a ten furlongs event stablemate Dubai Honour won three years ago. Ridden patiently early on by Tom Marquand, he made his move rounding the hometurn before readily reeling in Brian Meehan's Jayarebe inside the final furlong. Pushed clear to win by two lengths, it was a further six lengths back to the third. With next week's Juddmonte International coming too soon, there must be every chance Economics will be steered towards the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown (14th September). He is an exciting prospect and one to very much look forward to this Autumn and beyond.
I have been busy working on both One Jump Ahead and the York Ebor Update this week. On Wednesday, I ran through over a hundred horses with 14 times champion trainer Paul Nicholls. Needless to say, Team Ditcheat have a lot to look forward to with a plethora of exciting youngsters, including some new additions from France and Ireland. As in previous years, Paul has highlighted a selection of unraced bumper horses to watch out for this season.
Twenty four hours later, I contacted Jason Kelly who is David O'Meara's right-handed man. Jason is busy looking at yearlings at Deauville but he kindly found time to pass on news of the stable's runners at York next week, including leading Sky Bet Ebor hope Epic Poet. In addition to the Ebor squad, Jason pinpointed three new recruits he bought at the Arqana Summer Sale last month. It is an excellent interview and one clients are bound to find informative and profitable.
