The well bred Sallaal (11/4) was nominated as an unraced juvenile to follow in the Autumn Update and the son of Frankel made a winning start to his career in the seven furlongs novice stakes at Yarmouth on Tuesday. A colt by Frankel out of dual Group 1 winner Nahrain, he is a half-brother to the stable's 1000 Guineas winner Elmalka. Reported to have worked well in recent weeks, he was held up in midfield by Jack Mitchell. Having initially shown signs of greenness, Roger Varian's runner picked up well to reel in the more experienced Roman Centurion to win going away by half a length. Bred to be smart, he is a nice prospect for next year.
The Talking Trainers section in One Jump Ahead is starting to click into gear with two winners at Market Rasen on Tuesday. "A smart horse at home, we like him and he will go novice hurdling over two miles," is how Jonjo O'Neill described Roadlesstravelled (5/1) on page 105 and the former Irish pointer won the opening novice event in convincing fashion. The Lauro gelding made all before staying on strongly to register a four and three quarter lengths victory. The Jackdaws Castle team are in good nick with four winners during the last fortnight.
