The three day Craven meeting at Newmarket got underway on Tuesday and Kikkuli (5/2) provided the Top 40 Prospects in Ahead On The Flat with a winner in the seven furlongs Alex Scott Maiden Stakes. Beautifully bred being a son of Kingman and a half-brother to the brilliant Frankel, the Juddmonte owned colt had shaped with plenty of promise on his debut over C&D last Autumn and confirmed the view with a gutsy display here under Ryan Moore. The Harry Charlton trained runner was forced to dig deep to fend off the late challenge of the favourite Creative Story to prevail by a neck. A step up to a mile is likely to suit and he is expected to contest another novice stakes before having his sights raised. It is early days and connections will be hoping Kikkuki develops into a Pattern performer one day. More immediately, the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot could be a realistic target following one more run.
