Primoz got his chasing career off to the ideal start by winning the two miles handicap chase at Wetherby on Wednesday. The Westerner gelding, who began life in Irish points, won twice over hurdles at Ayr last term and is considered an exciting prospect by Lucinda Russell. The six year old looked a natural throughout jumping soundly - indeed, he almost over jumped at the second last - before staying on strongly to beat the vastly more experienced Pay The Piper by two lengths with the pair clear of the rest. Racing off a mark of 123, the youngster looks set to develop into a smart chaser. Featured in the Top 40 Prospects in One Jump Ahead, he is one to look forward to.
Declan Phelan's Irish Pointers were also amongst the winners on Wednesday with Clondaw General (5/2) scoring on his Rules bow at Worcester. A gelded son of Milan who was acquired for £150,000 in February having won his sole point for Michael Goff, he looked a strong stayer when taking the two miles seven novice hurdle. Trained by Kim Bailey, he jumped soundly and evidently handles slow ground very well.
I am working at Carlisle on Thursday - it is the Cumbrian track's first meeting of the season and it will be a surprise if the ground isn't testing. It hasn't stopped raining in my neck of the woods for the last 24 hours. I will therefore be back to update the Diary later in the week.
