Roger Varian has his team in good order at present with six winners during the last fortnight. As discussed, St Leger runner-up Rahiebb was an impressive winner of the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup last week and the Newmarket handler was responsible for the first two winners at Nottingham on Tuesday. Moreedd (5/1), who is featured in the Unraced Three Year Olds section in AOTF, is from a tremendous family being a half-brother to the stable's 1000 Guineas winner Elmalka and Group 3 winner Sallaal. Only fourth on his racecourse debut at Doncaster last month, the son of Night of Thunder may not have appreciated the fast ground on Town Moor and proved a different proposition here on rain softened ground at Colwick Park. Having raced prominently, Ray Dawson's mount made his challenge over a furlong out before staying on strongly to lead inside the final 110 yards. A neck scorer, he can only improve with experience and is a nice prospect for the future. Roger Varian commented on page 109 of AOTF: "A big powerful unraced colt, he is a half-brother to Elmalka and Sallaal. Immature last year, I like him a lot and am very hopeful about his future. I will be disappointed if he doesn't develop into a nice horse. Seven furlongs and a mile ought to suit him."
Half an hour later, Varian and Dawson doubled up when Knights Charge (2/1) made it two out of two as a three year old in the ten furlongs novice stakes. Highlighted in the Maidens In Waiting section, the Lucky Vega colt had won by five lengths on his reappearance at Lingfield and had little trouble defying his penalty here. Tracking through market rival Bay Royale, he was too good for Harry Eustace's runner leading over a furlong out before pulling clear. A length and a half victor, the pair stretched over three lengths clear of the third and the form is expected to work out. The winner looks tailormade for the Golden Gates Stakes at Royal Ascot (20th June).
Don't forget, the Ahead On The Flat Royal Ascot Update will be emailed to clients on Sunday 14th June. If you haven't ordered the Ahead On The Flat Updates, please head to the Publications section of the site. Entries for the Royal Hunt Cup (17th June) and Wokingham Stakes (20th June) - the Top 40 Prospects are set to be represented in both with a particularly strong hand in the latter event.
