Talk of New York records Group 2 win

Top 40 entry Talk of New York atoned for a luckless defeat at Goodwood last time with a commanding performance in the Group 2 Joel Stakes at Newmarket on Friday. Charlie Appleby's colt had chased home Bow Echo and Gstaad in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and looks ready for a return to Group 1 level. Racing in a small group on the stands rail, the son of Wootton Bassett moved to the front approaching the two marker before taking charge. Pushed clear under William Buick to record a four and three quarters of a length win, it was mentioned afterwards that the three year old could be supplemented for the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot (17th October). All the top event over a mile will certainly be on his agenda next year, too.

I must confess that it wasn't a surprise to see the other two runners in the Top 40 comes up short on the Rowley Mile. As discussed in the Autumn Update, the pair prefer slower ground and found conditions too quick on Friday. Both horses have done the section proud and have warranted their inclusion.
