Willie Mullins sent out three more winners at Punchestown on Monday, including Karbau who scored at the second time of asking over obstacles in the opening two miles maiden hurdle. Featured in the French Revolution section of OJA, the five year old raced too keenly on his Irish debut over two and a half miles at Naas last month before finishing fourth. Dropped back in distance and ridden from the front, the Cokoriko gelding jumped well and pulled away in the homestraight to record a sixteen lengths win. Entered in the Supreme and Turners Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham, he is likely to head to Gloucestershire in March. Despite winning his bumper in France on decent ground, he appeared to revel in the testing conditions.
Port Joulain is one of Declan Phelan's Irish Pointers in OJA and the six year old is another son of Cokoriko who got off the mark over hurdles later on the card. Found to have suffered an over reach on his reappearance at the same track in December, he ran well at Leopardstown over Christmas staying on well behind The Enabler over two and a half miles. The Rich and Susannah Ricci owned runner confirmed that promise by readily seeing off Sermandzarak by a couple of lengths in the maiden hurdle. A chaser in the making, he will have no trouble staying three miles in due course - stamina looks his strong suit.
