On Thursday afternoon, I spoke to Karl Burke and ran through his outstanding team of horses for the new edition of Ahead On The Flat. Seventh in the trainers championship last year with 119 winners and total prize-money of £3,310,725, the stable were responsible for 25 Pattern races winners, including Group 1 victories for Fallen Angel in the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh and Poptronic in the Qipco Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at Ascot in October. In addition to a strong team of older horses, Spigot Lodge Stables is also the home to some hugely exciting three year olds with Classic pretensions. Karl's team have been bolstered still further with a number of new additions owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum who were previously in training with Andrew Balding and Simon & Ed Crisford. The top dog in the North nowadays, Karl has plenty to look forward to in 2024.
Once again, there are a number of horses of Karl's who will be running in late March / early April and these will be highlighted in the One Jump Ahead Cheltenham Festival Update - these include one of the yard's exciting three year olds who holds Classic entries. If you haven't already ordered the Cheltenham Festival Update, please head to the Publications section of the site.
