The Top 40 Prospects in Ahead on The Flat have made a positive start and the section had two more winners over the weekend, the pair looking smart three year olds in the process. Maureen Haggas nominated Space Legend as her horse to follow when I visited Somerville Lodge in February and the son of Sea The Stars confirmed the promise he showed on his sole outing as a juvenile by winning readily in a ten furlongs maiden at Leicester on Saturday. Given a positive ride, Cieren Fallon's mount stretched away inside the final furlong to register a five and a half lengths success. The winning rider was impressed and feels he will be even better on a sounder surface. It will be interesting to see if the twice raced colt has earned a crack at a Derby trial next month. Either way, he looks set for a bright future.
Twenty four hours later, Sardinian Warrior produced a similar performance to win a mile novice stakes at Southwell. Like Space Legend, he had finished second on his racecourse bow at Kempton last backend and made an excellent start to his three year old career with a four and a half lengths victory at the Midlands track. Racing handily, he led with over two furlongs to run before being kept up to his work to score with plenty in hand. Yet to race beyond a mile, the Saxon Warrior colt is entered in the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York (16th May) and the Epsom Derby (1st June) and it won't be long before he tackles Pattern company. The John & Thady Gosden team have hit form in recent days - their last seven runners have all won - and many of the string have made a big step forward from their seasonal reappearances, which bodes well for Sardinian Warrior's future.
Bromley's Best Buys is one of the most popular articles in AOTF and the leading bloodstock agent came up trumps once again on Monday nominating The Man (100/30) as an unraced juvenile to watch out. A colt by Mehmas who cost £145,000 and trained by Richard Spencer, he won by a length on his first public appearance at Southwell. Having travelled strongly, he picked up well and was value for more than the winning margin. His trainer suggested a trip to Royal Ascot is very much on the cards with the possibility of another run beforehand.
