The Qatar Goodwood Festival got underway on Tuesday with Kyprios confirming himself the leading stayer with another fautless display in the Goodwood Cup on Tuesday. The six year old was regaining his crown having won it in 2022 before injury sidelined him twelve months ago. A four lengths winner, Aidan O'Brien's charge was recording his sixth Group 1 victory on the Sussex Downs and will doubtless take some stopping during the rest of the campaign.
Top 40 entry English Oak ran creditably in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes earlier on the card. An impressive winner of the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot last time, the four year old was tackling Pattern company for the first time. Positioned in behind Art Power and Audience, James Doyle's mount couldn't cope with the latter's change of gear keeping on to fill fourth position.
I spent Tuesday interviewing Olly Murphy and Harry Derham for the new edition of One Jump Ahead. Both handlers had personal best seasons with 102 and 44 winners respectively last winter and both have strengthened considerably during the summer. It is exciting times for the pair. Last Thursday, I also interviewed Donald McCain who has recruited strongly from the Irish point field to compliment an already decent team of youngsters. I will be carrying out more interviews throughout this week and next and will keep readers informed on here. In the meantime, please head to the Publications section of the site to order your copy of One Jump Ahead and the Updates.
